For the basket comparison, we select the cheapest matching product at each store for everyday items. Products are not identical across stores (different brands/sizes may be compared).
Loyalty card prices (Clubcard, Nectar, More Card) are included where available, as this reflects what most cardholding shoppers actually pay.
The "average per item" ranking is fairer than raw basket totals when stores match different numbers of items, but is still imperfect.
